Abstract

1,177,838. Gas turbine engines. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. July 25, 1968 [July 25, 1967], No.34126/67. Heading F1G. The air intake 12 to a gas turbine jet propulsion engine 13 contains an inflatable member 17 which is normally stowed adjacent the intake wall but which can be deployed into the intake and then inflated to obstruct the airflow to the engine 13 and thus prevent windmilling of the rotor assembly when the engine is inoperative. As shown, the member 17 comprises an inflatable annular member 18 closed, or partially closed, across its middle by a flexible wall 19. The member 17 when inflated bears against inlet guide vanes 20 and a nose cone 21 and is restrained by anchor lines 22 attached to a hinged arm 23. Deployment is effected by an actuator 25 having a safety lock 26 and inflation air is supplied from storage bottles or another engine. A membrane 28 divides the member 18 into two compartments to prevent complete deflation of the member in the event of failure of one compartment. The member 18 may receive a continuous air supply to compensate for any leaks. A winch may be provided for retraction. The inflatable member may be made from rubber, plastics, metal, or synthetic fibres and may include rigid reinforcement. In a modification, Fig.2 (not shown), the inflatable member has the form of a disc-shaped balloon (30) with a part spherical leading face (31).
