Abstract

1,177,811. Filter bed. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. 21 June, 1967 [22 June, 1966], No. 27985/66. Heading BID. The reverse-flow washing cycle of a filter bed and restoration thereafter of normal downward filtration flow are controlled automatically by four float operated valves 4, 6, 8, 10 which respectively control inlet and outlet of water being filtered and inlet and outlet of backwashing water. Clogging of the bed 2 raises the water level to 17 which starts siphon 16, filling chamber 19 and hence opening valve 10 and draining off the water above the bed to waste 15. Pipe 9 exceeds pipe 15 in crosssection, and chamber 13 is able to overflow, so float 14 is raised and closes inlet valve 4. As the water in filter tank 1 falls, floats 11, 12 successively close the filtrate outlet and open backwashing inlet valve 8. The bed is then backwashed upwards. Chamber 19 has a small outlet 20 and acts as a timer for the backwashing cycle. After 5 minutes backwashing, float 21 has fallen sufficiently to close valve 10, so that the water level above the bed rises again to restore valves 6, 8 to open and closed positions. As chamber 13 empties valve 4 is opened again by descending float 14.
