Abstract

A filter 2 is automatically backwashed with filtrate (from tank 3) when it clogs. Pump 1 pumps raw water through filter 2 into washwater tank 3 and service line 4. When the filter clogs, the head of water in pipe 5 upstream of the filter 2 actuates a float switch 6 which stops the pump 1. The filtrate in washwater tank 3 then flows through the filter in the reverse direction. After a time set by timer 7, the backwashing operation stops and filtering begins again. Fig 1b has a delivery valve (11), and an exhaust valve (9) leading to a sump (10) for the backwashed liquid. In Fig 2, clogging is sensed by a differential pressure gauge (15) connected across the filter 2 and the washwater tank (12) has an air release and air inlet valve (17). In Fig 1a there are 2 pumps, one for filtering, and one (4) for backwashing.
