A process for the simultaneous filling of the cavities of a multi-cavity mould with a material capable of expanding comprises dividing the material into individual portions of the correct size for the mould cavities and pouring these portions simultaneously into the cavities of the mould. The process is preferably used for forming foamed concrete building blocks in the apparatus shown. A multicavity mould 12 with removable base 13 is mounted below a filling device. This device comprises a funnel, a measuring shoot 2 with a plurality of measuring chambers 4 formed by dividing walls 9 in the base thereof and a movable plate 3 with partitions 10 forming the base of the measuring chambers. The base 3 is attached by brackets 14 to wheels 6 which run on ramps 7 so that the base can be moved from the position on the left where the holes 10 in the base align with the measuring chambers 4 and the mould cavities to the position on the right where the plate base moved upwards and sideways to close the measuring chambers 4. In operation, the base 3 is in its raised position and the measuring cavities are filled by a foamable mix supplied into the top of the funnel 1. The measuring cavities may be heated or insulated to maintain the material at the correct temperature. The mould base is then moved sideways and downwards so that the material from the measuring cavities falls into the mould cavities. The mould base can then be returned to the closed position, the measuring cavities refilled and the filled mould can be replaced by an empty one.
