Abstract

1,177,428. Coating cores by extrusion. STAMICARBON N.V. 15 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966; 28 Aug., 1967], No. 42125/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3 and H1] Foamed plastics having a skin of lower cell density are prepared by heating a non-crosslinked polyolefin, a physical blowing agent and a finely divided organic compound solidifying at a higher temperature than the polyolefin as cell size controller, to a temperature higher than that at which a uniformly foamed plastic is formed without force cooling, and force cooling the expanded product whereby a skin is formed thereon of less thickness than that obtained by gradual cooling. The compositions may be extruded on to wires to form insulated conductors. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, poly 4-methylpentene-1 or a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate, propylene or an alkyl methacrylate. The cell size controller may be a wax. In the example the extruded insulation is air cooled from jets 9 directed away from the extruder head 7 to prevent cooling thereof, and subsequently further cooled by water from line 11. The extruder is provided with steam jackets 5, 6 and may alternatively be of the cross-head type.
