Abstract

1,177,275. Mounting wiring assemblies; electric couplings; installation wiring arrangements. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 4 Feb., 1967, No. 5511/67. Headings H2C, H2E and H2H. [Also in Divisions E2 and H1] A wiring assembly for use in a motor vehicle comprises a primary run 21, Fig. 3, of tape cable and a plurality of branch runs of tape cable such as 30, interconnection between selected ones of the flat insulated conductors of the two runs being effected by rivets 19... 22. Preferably the conductors 11 ... 18 of the cables are of Al; the insulation may be PVC; and the rivets, which may be of A1 of star-shaped crosssection, are either used to pierce the insulation or forced through undersized holes therein. The rivet heads may be covered by strips of insulation. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), each branch run is prepared by trimming the insulation to expose the conductors at selected distances from an end of the cable; these exposed conductors are connected to uninsulated strip conductors by riveting or ultrasonic welding; after which the latter conductors are sandwiched between insulating strips which are welded together to form the primary run. To assist identification, the conductors may be anodized to distinctive colours; or the cable insulation may be marked, as by a coloured insert. A plurality of wiring assemblies may be used for selective interconnection in a vehicle (Fig. 6, not shown), the main runs being held together and to the vehicle body by a U-shaped clip, Fig. 7, made of polypropylene, the facing surfaces of the legs 42, 43 of the U being formed with teeth which retain a bridge member 44. Each set of teeth is in two relatively staggered sections to prevent lateral displacement of bridge 44. A two-part coupling. Fig. 12, for connecting two tape cables 55, 56 comprises plug and a socket, each having an outer housing 53, 54 and an inner nose-shaped member 51, 52 of polypropylene around which a cable end having exposed conductors is stretched. Longitudinal ridges (not shown) on the inner members guide and isolate the conductors. When the plug is engaged in the socket the nose portions deflect one another before adopting the position of mutual resilient contact shown. A lampholder. Fig. 13, for engaging a tape cable 89 with the leads of a capless lamp 90 comprises an outer insulating shell 81 haying two diagonally disposed inserts such as 85. Each insert traps part of cable 89 containing a conductor such as 87 against an integral part such as 83 of shell 81. A waist portion 91 of lamp 90 is engaged by projections 92 of the lampholder, and the leads such as 95 of the lamp are held in contact with the exposed cable conductors.
