Abstract

117,683. Dutt, P. K., and Hamer, J. D. July 27, 1917. Benzene ; toluene ; chlorthiophene ; chlorthiotolene.-Commercial benzol or toluol are freed from thiophene and thiotolene by chlorinating the latter compounds and removing the chloro compounds from the unattacked benzene and toluene by fractional distillation. The chlorination may be effected by means of gaseous chlorine, chlorine water, or chlorine compounds evolving chlorine on addition of acid, e.g. bleaching powder.
