Abstract

1,176,780. Stand-by supply systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 7 Nov., 1968, No. 52774/68. Heading H2H. Supply system includes a control circuit which causes a main supply to charge a battery under normal conditions, and connects the battery to an inverter to replace the main supply on failure of the latter. The supply is regulated by a constant voltage transformer. In the circuit shown in Fig. 1, a load 7 is normally fed by mains supply 6 which is connected to the saturated resonant tank circuit of transformer T1. If the mains should fail, the transformer is energized from a battery 1 through a parallel inverter 2. In normal operation, the mains voltage is sufficient to close contacts RLA-1 and RLA-2 so as to supply current to the transformer and also provide a signal to the control circuit 8. The control also receives a signal from the battery, and the charging current fed to the battery using the inverter 2 is adjusted according to the existing state of charge by altering the phase difference of the mains and inverter output. The control circuit 8, Fig. 2 (not shown), includes a unijunction transistor oscillator which determines the output frequency, a bi-stable pulse circuit for providing thyristor gating pulses, a synchronizing circuit, a phaseshifting circuit, and a reference circuit. Modifications, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), include the replacement of switch RLA-1 by a thyristor device, and an alternative control circuit which includes a thermistor for indirectly sensing the battery voltage.
