Abstract

[Also in Division C7] In bonding two aluminium and/or aluminium alloy parts an aluminium-silicon brazing alloy and a bond-promoting metal selected from nickel, cobalt, iron, arsenic and silver are provided between the parts, the parts are arranged in a protective atmosphere, the temperature of the parts is increased so that a fused bonding material having as its constituents the brazing alloy and bond-promoting metal bonds together the parts, the temperature of the parts is reduced to about 100‹ F. below the melting point of the bonding material, and the parts are removed from the protective atmosphere at this temperature. An aluminium alloy (at least 99%) heat exchanger comprising fins, tubes and headers is bonded by using aluminium-10% silicon alloy shim stock coated with nickel. Shims are placed around tubes fitted in holes in the headers and at other surfaces to be joined and the assembly is heated in a nitrogen furnace to 1000‹ F. within ten minutes and to 1100‹ F. in 1¢ minutes. The assembly is held at 1100‹ F. for ¢ minute, the heater being then turned off and the assembly cooled to 1000‹ F. within two minutes and removed. In another example a heat exchanger comprises aluminium alloy (1À2% mg.) tubes clad externally with aluminium-10% silicon alloy, the same aluminium alloy headers clad on both sides with the aluminium-silicon alloy and pins of aluminium alloy (at least 99%) without cladding. The tubes and headers are electroless plated with nickel and the parts are assembled and heated in nitrogen to the same temperatures as before. The bond-promoting metal maybe included in the bonding alloy and the protective atmosphere may be of argon, helium, hydrogen or vacuum. The bond-promoting metal may be applied as a coating deposited by vacuum or thermal deposition.
