Abstract

1,176,649. Electro-chemical production of olefin oxides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A. G. Dec.30, 1966 [Jan.25, 1966], No.58280/66. Heading C7B. In a process for the production of olefin oxides by electro-chemical conversion of elefins, i.e. gaseous mono-olefins such as ethylene, propylene and butylene, and halogenated mono-olefins such as allyl chloride, in a cell in which the anode and cathode are separated by a diaphragm and using an aqueous electrolyte containing a metal halide which is passed from the anode compartment through the diaphragm to the cathode compartment, the diaphragm consists of a textile fabric, e. g. a woven fabric, which has been prepared from thermoplastic fibres or filaments or form fibres or filaments coated with thermoplastic materials either before or after the production of the textile material, and the resistance of which to liquid flow is such that from 10-60Kg/hr of a 5% aqueous potassium chloride solution pass therethrough per dm<SP>2</SP> of its area at a temperature of 20‹ C. and at an excess pressure of 200mm water column. The thermoplastic material used may be a polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, or a polyester, polyamide, polyolefin or polyacrylonitrile. The diaphragm fabric may be subjected to a pressure or a pressure and heat-treatment to produce the required liquid flow resistance. The diaphragm may comprise more than one thickness of textile material, the different thicknesses having different porosities.
