[Also in Divisions F1 and F4] In a liquid-cooling system of a gas-turbine rotor, stationary inlet and outlet coolant liquid chambers 3, 4 surround one end of the rotor shaft 1 and impellers 17, 23 are provided in the chambers 3, 4 respectively to generate centrifugal pressure heads to prevent liquid leaking through the shaft clearances 15, 19 from chambers 3 to 4 or from chamber 4 to atmosphere. The coolant liquid is supplied to chamber 3 and passes through a pipe 7 within the shaft 1 to passages 10 in the turbine disc 9 and thence to passages 13 in the blades 12. The liquid returns to chamber 4 through further passages 11 in the disc 9, an annular passage 8 surrounding pipe 7, and ports 14 in shaft 1. The blades 18, 24 are mounted on the sides of their respective impellers 17, 23 which face in the direction of lower pressure.
