Abstract
1,175,981. Coating pipes. E. H. PRIEST, and G. M. PRIEST. 6 March, 1967 [14 Feb., 1966], No. 6451/66. Heading F2P. A machine for continuously covering a length of a generally cylindrical rod or tube comprises a feed device for simultaneously rotating the rod or tube and advancing it longitudinally through a process station 1 in which the rod or tube is provided with a cover by winding a strip of material helically around the rod or tube and then bonding adjacent turns of the strip together, for example, a coating of tar or bitumen as adhesive and a strip of glass fibre. The feed device includes one or more rows 2, 3 of supporting wheels for bearing on the underside of the rod or tube and supporting the same. At least some of the wheels are driven and are skewed with respect to the axis of the rod or tube such that a helical motion is imparted to the rod or tube. In the construction shown the feed device has two sets of driven wheels 6a, 6b, the former having a predetermined fixed speed and the latter having a variable speed so that a rod or tube fed on to the rollers 6b from ontake ramps 8 can be made to catch up with a previously fed rod or tube. At the offtake side of the machine a set of variable speed driven wheels 6c and a set of braked wheels 6d, the latter slowing the rod or tube sufficiently so that it can be passed on to offtake ramps 13. A cutting device 12 is actuated after the predetermined movement of a trailer wheel 10 driven by engagement with the rod or tube. The wheels 6 may be mounted on tables to be laterally relatively movable to accommodate rods or tubes of different diameters (Fig. 2, not shown). Wrapping may be effected by passing a wrapping(s) from a roll(s) over two universally mounted rollers and thence on to the rod or tube (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification a single row of driving wheels is provided in conjunction with two parallel rows of idler guide wheels all mounted on V-shaped supports (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). The rows of guide wheels are adjustable laterally of the V-shaped supports and a number of linked supports at the input and output ends of the machine are pivotable such that rods or tubes may be rolled on to the supporting wheels. The wrapping material may be rubber or a synthetic resin such as polyvinyl chloride.
