Abstract
1,175,281. Distillation apparatus, multistage flash type. DRYSDALE & CO. Ltd. 4 July, 1968 [4 July, 1967], No. 30636/67. Heading BIB. Liquid to be distilled, e.g. salt water, flows through pipe 18 into the lowest of a series of superposed chambers 3 to 9 connected by standpipes 3A to 8A, progressive reduced pressure being maintained in successive chambers by vacuum pump 20 connected to the highest chamber 9; the liquid undergoes successive partial evaporation as it rises through the chambers, and the residual liquid flows out of chamber 9 through downcomer pipe 10 into a sealing tank 11 which discharges at atmospheric pressure. No liquid pump is necessary because the minimum height of the highest chamber above the lowest chamber and the minimum length of the downcomer pipe are each at least equal to the height of a barometric column of the liquid corresponding to the degree of vacuum in the highest chamber. The vapours evolved in each chamber condense on tubes 14, and the condensate flows up duct 13 and is discharged through pipe 15 to sealing tank 16.
