Abstract

1,175,259. Delay lines. BUNKER-RAMO CORP. 20 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 52720/67. Heading H1W. A delay line is made by coiling an insulated wire and plating a continuous metal coating about the insulated wire and within the interstices of the coil. The surface of the insulation is first etched and sensitized, e.g. by immersion in stanuous chloride. It is then activated with e.g. gold chloride and coated with e.g. silver, copper or gold by an electroless method. The treated wire is formed into a coil, e.g. a multilayer coil of circular or square section, and the coil is electroplated to deposit an appreciable thickness of metal over the exterior of the coil and between the interstices of the turns. In a modification of this process, the coil is wound after the etching step and metal strips 18 are interwoven with the coil in such a manner as to separate the turns and prevent insulationto-insulation contact. The steps of sensitization, activation, electroless and electro-plating are then carried out on the coil. The coating replaces the strapping, jacketting, or potting normally used to retain the shape of the coil and to reduce its inductance.
