Abstract

1,174,961. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. 3 Jan., 1967, No. 321/67. Heading H2A. An electromagnetic pump has an arcuate, tubular duct for the electrically conducting fluid and rotatable magnetic structures providing an even number of spaced magnet pole pairs which provide the magnetic flux across the duct. The-magnet poles on each structure are spaced and shaped such that the gap between the ends of adjacent poles is between one and four times the length of the air gap between the magnet pole pairs. It is stated that this spacing minimizes flux linkage and substantially reduces the field free regions inthe fluid since there is a larger area of iron for the main flux and rapid reversal of flux direction when the structures are rotated to pump the fluid. As shown, poles 131-134 are secured on yokes 122, 124 which are rotatably mounted for rotation by an external drive and provide a magnetic field through duct 110. The pole pieces 135-138 are shaped so that G < X < 4G in the plane shown and taper to the width of the duct in the perpendicular plane to provide the flux distribution shown with flux reversal occurring at 146. The duct 110 may be made of stainless steel or refractory metal with side conductors of silver 118, 116. Alternatively the duct may be made wholly of ceramic and the side conductor omitted, or compositely of ceramic and metal. The pump may be modified by providing heat shields between the duct and the magnet poles with apertures in the shield aligned with the poles. If used in a rarified atmosphere, the surfaces facing the duct may be gold plated to reflect the heat and the remaining surfaces blackened to improve heat dissipation.
