Abstract

1,174,883. Making corrugated tubes. KOPPY TOOL CORP. 29 March, 1968 [3 April, 1967], No. 15162/68. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Division F2] A method of making a collapsible tubular member having predictable collapsing characteristics for use for example in the steering shaft assembly of motor vehicles comprises the steps of providing a tubular blank 10 with an intermediate wall section deformed symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the blank and having axially spaced end sections 26, 28 (Fig. 2) and applying a predetermined axial force to produce relative axial movement of the end sections towards one another so that the intermediate wall section collapses into a predetermined pattern (Fig. 4) and applying a tensile axial force to the end sections to partially restore the collapsed intermediate wall section to its original configuration (Fig. 6) to complete the structural member. In order to control the force necessary to initiate collapse of the member in use circumferentially spaced notches are cut in the outer radial portions of the corrugations.
