Reciprocating - saw machines; saws.-In reciprocating-saw machines f o r severing lengths of metal, the work is rotated continuously and the idle stroke of the saw is effected by the friction between it and the rotating work. The work 1 is mounted upon the driving-shaft 3 of the machine, as by means of an expansible mandrel 2, and a number of saws 5 and spacing- bars are clamped by screws between flanges on a holder 6. The holder is formed on a bar provided with rackteeth 7 at its opposite end, and a pinion 8 engaging with the rack effects the cutting stroke of the saws, the pinion being mounted on a shaft 9 rotated by chain-gearing from a clutch-sleeve 12 on the shaft 3. During the cutting stroke, a screw 20 slidable along the shaft 9 screws into a nut 21 which is prevented from sliding along the shaft by a collar 22, and at the end of the cutting stroke, the screw turns the nut and, through a link 25 and a lever 18, disconnects the clutch-sleeve 12 from the shaft 3, leaving the saws, the screw 20, the nut 21, and the clutch-lever 18 free to be returned to their initial positions by the friction between the saws and the work.
