The invention relates to a process for the preparation of esters in which an aliphatic alcohol having from 5-12 carbon atoms in the chain is reacted with carboxylic acid or with the anhydride of such an acid, in the presence of a dehydrating adsorbent material having pores of 3 to 4 Angstrom units diameter, e.g. a natural zeolite, a synthetic zeolite or pelletized glass fibre. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of 190‹ to 200‹ C. and at a pressure of 600 to 700 millimetres of mercury and with about 30% in excess of the stoichiometric amount of higher aliphatic alcohol. Examples show the preparation of dialkyl phthalate didecyl adipate using respectively a synthetic zeolite and pelletized glass fibre.
