Abstract
1,173,720. Freeze drying. LEYBOLD-HERAEUS-VERWALTUNG G.m.b.H. 29 April, 1968 [18 May, 1967], No. 20305/68. Heading F4G. In an apparatus for freeze drying small quantities of substances, e.g. tissues for histological or histochemical purposes, the substance when in the freeze drying chamber, is shielded from environmental thermal radiation by a cover which contacts a heat absorbing plate of a refrigerating device, to form an enclosure for the substance, the enclosure being open to the chamber. In the embodiment shown the apparatus comprises an evacuable chamber 1 and a refrigerating and heating device 4 comprising two thermo-electric modules 41; 42 operable by the Peltier effect. The cover 7 with the upper plate of module 41 forms an enclosure for the vessel 6 supported by module 42 and containing the substance and wax into which the dried substance is to be embedded. The enclosure is open at its ends. The cover 7 is preferably made of good heat conducting material. When the frozen substance is being dried the device 4 is absorbing heat to maintain the necessary low temperature. After the substance is dried the device 4 switches over to supply heat to melt the wax and embed the dried substance. The cover 7 accelerates the melting of the wax due to it radiating heat on to the wax.
