Abstract

The cooling apparatus comprises a radiating surface, whose radiation falls onto one or more transparent windows from the atmosphere, and a filled cold storage vessel. Surface and vessel are thermally coupled by a thermal diode, and this transfers heat only from vessel to surface. Thermal insulation of the apparatus from the environment is also included. The storage vessel (1) is placed in the ground, and the assembly of radiation surface (5) and thermal diodes (6) floats on the storage material (9), this material being typically a liquid. The material can be such as to change between the solid and liquid states near the operating temperature of the apparatus.
