[Also in Division G2] Gelatin containing compositions, such as photographic silver halide emulsions, are hardened by incorporating poly(dialdehyde dextrose) made by oxidation of a synthetic polydextrose obtained by polycondensation of dextrose in dimethyl sulphone or tetramethylene sulphone in the presence of a Lewis acid. The poly (dialdehyde dextrose) also acts as an antifoggant and is incorporated by adding as an aqueous solution to aqueous gelatin solution. The gelatin which is hardened includes gelatin derivatives and mixtures of gelatin with ethyl acrylate or butyl acrylate copolymers with acrylic acid. When used in silver halide emulsions these may contain the usual additives and may be used for example in diffusion transfer processes. The use of poly (dialdehyde dextrose) as a hardener in silver halide materials which are developed in the presence of colour couplers reduces the formation of stain. A synthetic polydextrose is obtained by heating dextrose and 85% phosphoric acid in dimethyl sulphone or tetramethylene sulphone solution under partial vacuum while distilling off a sulphone-water azeotrope. The polymer was filtered off and reprecipitated from aqueous solution with acetone. Poly (dialdehyde dextrose) is made by oxidizing the above polydextrose with periodic acid at about room temperature and isolated by pouring into acetone, filtering and washing with methanol.
