Abstract

1,173,293. Electronic counters. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 14 March, 1967 [18 March, 1966], No. 11960/66. Headings G4A and G4H. Errors in the indication of the displacement of a member from a datum position are detected. A pulse generator 10 responds to movement of the member 9 by producing forward or reverse count pulses on one or other of leads 11, 12 and 90 degrees displaced waveforms of one-quarter the frequency on leads 13, 14. The latter are differentiated at 36, 37 and fed to circuits 40, 41. The count pulses are delayed at 33, 34 and also fed to 40, 41. In normal operation the pulses due to waveforms 13, 14 alternate with the delayed count pulses so that error detection circuits are primed and reset alternately. If however two count pulses are received in succession or a count pulse is omitted, then circuit 40 or 41, as the case may be, signals circuit 42 to reset the counter 17 and signal controller 32 to inhibit further operation. The counter 17 is reversible, the direction of count being controlled by leads 20, 21. When the counter passes through zero it signals detector 25 to reverse sign selector 24 and count direction controller 32. The counter comprises a number of decimal stages 44 monitored by a like number of quinary stages 45, lack of coincidence resulting in the corresponding denominational display 47 being ineffective.
