Abstract

1,173,275. Helmets. P. W. BOTHWELL and J. M. TOJEIRO. 15 Feb., 1967 [16 Feb., 1966; 12 May, 1966], Nos. 6864/66 and 21179/66. Heading A3V. The outer shell of a safety helmet comprises layers 12 and 13 joined to each other at the periphery of the shell by a gently curving portion 14, the space between the layers containing impact-absorbing material in the form of honeycomb material 18 filled with foamed material 19. The inner layer 13 may be perforated and the layers 12 and 13 may be spaced apart uniformly or variably over the shell. Within the shell there may be layers 15, 16 and 17 of cork, polyurethane and cloth respectively or a cradle (21), Fig. 3 not shown, of thick polyurethane may be substituted for layers 16 and 17. Alternatively a plurality of thin polyurethane liners may be supplied with the helmet for securing inside the cork layer 15. A chinstrap 111 is rivetted at one end to the inner layer 13 at 113 and releasably secured at the other by means of a tongue 31 and push button or pull catch in a recess in the peripheral portion 14. Each layer 12 and 13 may be double-walled with impact-absorbing material between the walls and the layers, or the space between single-walled layers 12 and 13 may be partitioned, with a honeycomb layer on each side of the partition.
