Abstract

117,267. Wallace, E. C., and Prescott, S. C. July 5, 1917, [Convention date]. Refuse, dust-bin, treating; manures.-In a process for treating garbage with aerobic bacteria, the garbage is mixed with finely ground mineral or other absorbent material to prevent the action of the bacteria from being impeded by the moisture contained in the garbage. Suitable absorbent materials are orthoclase or other potassium-containing rocks, phosphate rock, calcareous rock, gypsum, ground peat, woody tissue, sawdust, and sewage sludge. The material may be placed in containers, to which warm, cool or moistened air can be supplied, with a culture of appropriate bacteria, and fresh amounts of material with a gradually increasing proportion of absorbent added as the action slackens. Suitable bacteria axe those of the Bacillus subtilis group, especially Bacterium megatherium. The resulting product may be used as manure.
