Abstract

1,172,424. Supporting recording tape. BACH AURICON Inc. 3 Feb., 1967, No. 5271/67. Heading G5R. In apparatus for recording transverse tracks across a magnetic tape 103 by at least one rotating or reciprocating transducer 100 in continuous physical contact with the tape, the tape 103 is supported by a low-friction platen 104 having a groove 105 of substantially the same size and shape as the locus of the transducer and connected to vacuum. The arrangement is designed to resiliently support video tape beneath the transducer and to reduce flutter. The transducer path may be: (a) Quasi-elliptical (Fig. 1), produced by a rotating crank 62 coupled to an arm 60 slidable through a pivoted post 64; (b) Quasi-rectangular (Fig. 3 not shown) produced by a trianguloid cam (86) rotating in a rectangular aperture (85) in an arm (80) confined at one end by a post (82) extending through a slot (81), or (c) Circular (Fig. 6) produced by an arm 101 rotated by a shaft 102. In cases (a) and (b) the arms (such as 60, Fig. 1) carry a constantly energized erase head 54 and record head 55, so that in the upper part of the path the erase head demagnetizes the tape in front of the trailing recording-head and in the return part erases the signal recorded by the now leading record head. This arrangement avoids switching the heads.
