Novel therapeutic pyridinium salts of the general formula in which R is a straight or branched alkyl radical of 1 to 12 carbons R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are the same or different and each represents hydrogen, halogen or a straight or branched alkyl radical of 1 to 12 carbons or a cycloalkyl radical having 5 or 6 carbons in the ring and X is halogen, are prepared by the interaction of the appropriate beta-alkoxy-beta-aryl-ethyl halide and an excess of anhydrous pyridine at an elevated temperature. 1 - (p - Cyclopentylphenyl) - 1 - (2<SP>1</SP>- ethylheryloxy)-2-bromoethane is obtained by the interaction of p-cyclopentylbenzene magnesium bromide (obtained by bromination of cyclopentylbenzene followed by treatment of the resulting 1-bromo-4-cyclopentylbenzene with magnesium) and 1,2-dibromoethyl-2<SP>1</SP>-ethylhexyl ether, the latter dibromo compound being obtained by the reaction sequence: interaction of paraldehyde and 2-ethylhexanol in the presence of gaseous hydrochloric acid to give 1 -chloroethyl- 2<SP>1</SP>-ethylhexyl ether and bromination of this chloro compound. 1 - (2<SP>1</SP> - Ethylhexyloxy) - 1 - (3<SP>11</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> - dichlorophenyl)-2-bromoethane is obtained by the interaction of the above dibromo ether and 3,4-dichlorobenzene magnesium bromide.
