Abstract
1,171,523. Preventing wrong movement of parts of engines. GOTAVERKEN A.B. March 20, 1967 [April 7, 1966], No.12932/67. Heading F1K. [Also in Division G4] In a remote control manoeuvring system for a reversible internal combustion engine e.g. a direct-coupled marine engine, the fuel supply is cut off if the direction of rotation of a shaft in the engine disagrees with that for which the reversing gear is set. A rod-shaped member 5, Fig. 2 provided with a central boss 6 is arranged to slide transversely with respect to shaft 19 which is coupled to the engine, being normally restrained in a central position by means of springs 21. Boss 6 is hollow and provides a housing for a cylindrical member 10 capable of sliding within it and normally held out of engagement with shaft 19 by means of springs 13 which engage a disc-shaped upper portion 11. When air pressure is applied above piston 17 it engages member 10 and forces it into contact with shaft 19; roughened friction surfaces on member 10 and shaft 19 then cause transverse movement of the member 5 to occur in a direction dependent upon the direction of rotation of shaft 19. In accordance with the sense of that movement one or other of the engaging members 22, 23 carried by either end of the member 5 operates the corresponding one of two valves 24, 25. When reversing handle 28, Fig. 1 is moved to either of its extreme positions cam 27 causes one of the forward and reverse valves 29, 30 respectively to open, admitting air from supply line 31 to the corresponding control line 33, 32. The admission of air to either control line causes switch over valve 34 to operate and admit air to cylinder 15 in which piston 17 (Fig.2) operates. Rotation of engine shaft 19 then causes movement of member 5 to occur, whereby one of the valves 24, 25 is operated and couples the corresponding air line 32, 33 to switch-over valve 36, air only reaching the valve however, if the rotation of the shaft is in the appropriate sense. The fuel supply to the engine is normally blocked, but switch-over valve 36 when energized operates a release mechanism 37 unblocking the fuel supply.
