A fastener comprises a stud 20 including a shank portion 23 and an enlargement 24 thereon, the exterior of which is substantially circular about a longitudinal axis, and a resilient retaining member 10 including a wall 16 around a socket 11 having an entry end for receiving the stud axially, there being a plurality of internal projections 12 carried by the wall, each in the form of a bar which extends chordwise in relation to the axis, and which is integrally connected to the wall, both at the ends of the chord and by a membrane 18 adjacent to the entry end of the socket, so that the bar is spaced from the wall by a slot 17 extending axially and chordally, open away from the entry end and blind towards the entry end, the bar having an inner surface including a portion 13 which extends away from the entry end and towards the axis, to a chordal line which is abreast of part of the slot, and which includes the point on the projection closest to the axis, the size of the enlargement on the shank being such that, as it is inserted into the socket, a leading part of the enlargement will engage the bars and deflect each bar into the respective slot until the enlargement provided has passed the said chordal line, whereupon the bar will resiliently return to a position in which it engages a trailing part of the enlargement and resists withdrawal of the stud. As shown the inner surface of each bar has a second portion 15 inclined away from the axis and away from the entry end. In each slot 17 a rib can be provided if desired to limit the extent to which the stud engaging parts 12 can flex away from the axis of the retaining member. The retaining member 10 is embraced about its outer surface by a metal socket 32 having a central bore 33 through which a rivet can be passed to attach the retaining member to a part. The base 34 of the socket 32 could be replaced by a moulded section including a hollow expandable rivet as described in Specification No. 590339. In a modification the socket 32 can be formed so that the retaining member can be snapped into it, the arrangement being such that the force required to remove the retaining member from the socket is considerably greater than the force required to pull the stud out of the retaining member. The socket 32 can be provided with a strengthening annular rib. In an alternative construction the retaining member is integral with a base having a central aperture through which a rivet can be passed to secure the retaining member to a part. The stud has an aperture through which a rivet can be passed to secure it to a part.
