An electrolytic cell intended to operate under vacuum has an expandable container located therein so that under vacuum conditions within the cell the container is in an expanded condition and, upon collapse of the vacuum, the container contracts and enables the level of electrolyte to fall. The container, e.g. a sealed bag of plastics material may be located in a reservoir separate from, but communicating with, the electrolyte chamber, and may, in the expanded condition, substantially fill the reservoir. The invention may be applied to the cell described in Specification 1,128, 804 so as to uncover the electrodes and reduce or stop the reaction in the cell should the vacuum fail.
