Abstract
1,171,173. Photo-electric absorption measurement. SAUNDERS - ROE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept.8, 1967 [Sept. 9, 1966], No. 40494/66. Heading G1A. In a radiation absorption measurement where radiation after passing through a sample and a reference radiation is alternately received by a detecting system, the mean value of the varying output of the system is maintained constant by adjustment of the amplification of the detector system so that the alternating component of the output, which is the difference between the reference radiation and the attenuated radiation, is corrected for inherent drift in the amplification system and for decay in the sources of radiation and is also linearly related to the parameter of the sample causing an exporential attenuation of the radiation. As shown in Fig. 1, # or γ radiation from source 1 after passing through a pipe 3 carrying petroleum irradiates a phosphor 11. A reference source 6 of similar radiation is mounted upon the rotating shaft 5 of a shutter 8, so that a photo-multiplier 13 alternately receives light scintillations from phosphor 11 and light scintillations from another phosphor 12 when irradiated by the rotating reference radiation source 6. The photo-multiplier output is amplified at 14 and 15 and the mean value of the amplified signal appears at the low pan filter 21 to be compared with a reference voltage 22. The difference voltage is amplified at 20 to supply indirectly heated thermistors 18, 19 in a feed-back path of amplifier 15 to thereby maintain the mean value of the output of amplifier 20 at the value of reference source 22. The alternating component of this output appears at capacitor 23 and is rectified synchronously with shutter 8. This output is linearly proportional to the parameter of the petroleum causing an exponential attenuation of the radiation passing there through.
