Abstract

1,170,741. Pelleting fusible materials. ELLIOTT ASSOCIATED DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 14 Nov., 1966 [12 Aug., 1965], No. 34605/65. Heading B5A. Resins, e.g. cumarone, waxes, pitch, low temperature metal alloys or sulphur, are pelletized or pastillated by the discharge of molten drops thereof from a plurality of groups of spaced drop forming heads 15, each comprising a nozzle with a reciprocating plunger therein, into an elongated tank 12 of water or other cooling liquid under the liquid surface, whereof operates a slow moving stainless steel conveyer band or screw conveyer on to which the solidified drops collect and are conveyed and discharged into a sump 18 whence they are delivered, through a valve 9, to a rotary screen 20 by a pump 21 provided with a rubber or rubber lined screw impeller. Pellets that do not sink are collected against baffles 22 at the discharge end of the tank 12 and may be treated with an additive to make them sink. The tank water preferably contains an anti-stick additive e.g. a dimethyl silicone fluid, so that pellets may pile up upon one another on the conveyer without sticking. The cooling water temperature is maintained constant by continuously introducing cool water near the bottom of the tank 12 and removing overflow hotter water from the top thereof. The feed temperature to the nozzles is maintained close to the feed melting point so that the formation of " tails " is avoided on the drops, or the feed, e.g. sulphur, may be supercooled.
