Abstract

1,170,539. Foamed cross-linked olefin polymers. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 10 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36844/67. Headings C3C and C3P. Foamed cross-linked olefin polymers are obtained by (1) melting an olefin polymer in an extruder, (2) introducing into the decompression zone of the extruder a solution comprising a peroxidic cross-linking agent and a blowing agent having a boiling point below 40‹ C., (3) homogenizing the polymer melt mixture, (4) controlling the temperature of the homogenized mass such that it is capable of flowing through the nozzle of the extruder, (5) forcing the mass through the nozzle of the extruder to form a dimensionally stable partially crosslinked continuous length of foamed olefin polymer, and (6) completing the cross-linking of the polymer by heating. Pigments, fillers, age resistors and sulphur may be in admixture with the polymer. In the examples, polyethylene, polypropylene or an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer are used, together with dicumyl peroxide, 2,6-dimethyl-2,5-(t-butylperoxy)hexane, or di-t-butyl peroxide, and CCl 3 F or CCl 2 F 2 , and optionally carbon black, titanium dioxide, sulphur, aluminium silicate, calcium stearate, polymeric 2,2,4-trimethyl dihydroquinoline, zinc stearate, and 4,4-thio-bis-(6-t-butyl-3- methyl phenol).
