Abstract

1,170,411. Ball joint. P.R. MOTORS Ltd. 30 Nov., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 37261/65. Addition to 942,252. Heading E2F. [Also in Division F2] A universal joint of the ball and socket type comprises an elongated male member 4 having one end shaped as a ball 1 having partspherical surfaces 2 separated by relieved flanks 3 with coaxial, part-cylindrical, convex surfaces of equal radius of curvature which is less than that of the spherical surfaces, and having their common axis passing through the centre of curvature of the part-spherical surfaces. The ball is received by a socket 5 with an interior opening 6 of rectangular profile, the longitudinal side walls 6a of which are each provided with a part-sperical or conical bearing recess 7, corresponding to the part-spherical surfaces of the ball, spaced apart by a distance such that, the part-cylindrical surfaces will clear them when the male member is inserted. The joint is secured by inserting the male member in this position, rotating it through 90‹ and inserting the plane-faced key members 9 which abut against the part cylindrical faces and which can be locked in place, e.g. by a circlip 10, a ring nut or set screws.
