Abstract

1,170,299. Olefin polymers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 9 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 36517/67. Heading C3P. Olefin polymers having a broad molecular weight distribution are made by polymerizng ethylene alone or if desired with up to 10% by weight of propylene or butene-1, in suspension or in the gaseous phase, using hydrogen as a modifier, in the presence of a catalyst which comprises (a) 0À5 to 10 parts by weight of the solid reaction product of Ti(OR) 4-n Cl n , n being 1, 2 or 3 and R a C 1 to C 8 hydrocarbon radical, with one or more chlorine-containing alkyl-aluminium compounds and (b), 1 part by weight of the solid reaction product of TiCl 4 with one or more chlorine containing alkylaluminium compounds, the concentration of (a) and (b) being in the range of 0À05 to 0À3 millimole per litre of dispersing agent in the suspension process or per 0À5 litre of reactor volume when operating in the gaseous phase, and as activator, (c) one or more organo-aluminium compounds selected from compounds of the general formula AlR<SP>1</SP> 3 where R<SP>1</SP> stands for a C 4 to C 40 hydrocarbon radical, or a reaction product of a trialkylaluminium or a dialkylaluminium hydride with a diolefin, e.g. butadiene-1,3 or isoprene, in a concentration of 0À2 to 3 millimoles of aluminium equivalent per litre of dispersing agent or reactor volume. Exemplified polymers are a copolymer of ethylene and 2% by volume of butene-(1), and polyethylene. These polymers have an ash content of less than 0À02% by weight and a u-value greater than or equal to 10, (u-value, a measure of the broadness of the molecular weight distribution, is defined in the Specification).
