Abstract

1, 170, 239. Reciprocating fluid motors; valve gear. SPERRY RAND Ltd. Feb. 1, 1967 [Dec. 22, 1965], No. 54345/65. Headings F1A and F1M. A hydraulic or pneumatic motor comprises a piston 2, Fig. 1, continuously supplied with pressure fluid on its smaller effective area side Y and alternately connected to pressure and exhaust on its larger effective area side X, a reversing valve 4 being fluid actuated by a valve 5 responsive to the pressure in the supply line 3, so that when the supply line pressure rises to a predetermined pressure due to piston 2 reaching the end of its stroke or stalling, valve 5 reverses valve 4 to reverse the piston stroke. Valve 5 is adjustably loaded by a spring 34, Fig. 2, with spacers 35, and has an actuating chamber C connected to the supply line 3. In its left-hand position shown, valve 5 connects the actuating chambers A and B of valve 4 to exhaust, a detent mechanism 17 holding valve 4 in position. When piston 2 reaches the end of its stroke or stalls, and the supply line pressure rises above the predetermined value, valve 5 is moved to the right against spring 34, and connects chamber A of valve 4 to the side X of piston 2 and chamber B to the supply line. The effective piston area in chamber A is twice that in chamber B, so that, depending on whether the side X of piston 2 is connected to pressure or exhaust, valve 4 will be moved to the right or left to reverse the connections to motor 1. When piston 2 begins to move on its next stroke, the supply line pressure falls, and spring 34 returns valve 5 to its lefthand position, in which it connects chambers A and B of valve 4 to exhaust.
