Abstract

1,169,731. Chimneys. MITCHELL CONSTRUCTION KINNEAR MOODIE GROUP Ltd., C. BROOKS, A. G. O. SPARK, and R. J. S. McBEAN. 24 Feb., 1967 [25 Feb., 1966], No. 8492/66. Heading F4J. A chimney stack comprises a number of superimposed main units 10, each unit consisting of three hollow refractory core blocks 18, 19, 20 encircled by a sleeve 24 to provide flue passages 21, 22, 23, having resilient filling of foamed polystyrene 25 disposed between said sleeve and said blocks, the uppermost of said units 10 being covered by a cap 11 of corrosion resisting high alumina cement and the three lowermost units 12, 13, 14 being provided with openings 15, 16, 17 connected to combustion appliances. Flue gases passing into the chimney through the opening 17 are guided through the partition dividing units 13, 14, through unit 13, through the partition dividing units 12, 13 and into flue 23, flue gases from opening 16 pass via a separate passage in the partition dividing units 12, 13 into flue 22, the gases from opening 15 passing straight into flue 21. The core blocks are made of refractory lightweight concrete with a high alumina content and the sleeves of reinforced concrete. Adjacent units are held together by tie rod screws that extend through holes within the thickness of the sleeve wall and engage internally threaded coupling members (Fig. 14). The holes in the sleeves are grouted with Portland cement or epoxy resin cement which reinforces the joint. The openings 15, 16 and 17 may have metal sleeves (Figs. 4-6) sealed into the openings with asbestos the appliance flue ducts being push fitted into said sleeves. Alternatively (Figs. 4A-6A) the flue ducts are a loose fit in said openings, the spaces being filled with packing held by flanges on the flue ducts. Soot doors (30, 39 and 48) are provided in the lowermost units 12, 13 and 14 (Figs. 4-6, 4A-6A).
