Abstract

1,169,386. Spiked plates. HYDRO-AIR ENG. Inc. 6 April, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 15948/67. Heading F2H. A connector for securing together adjacent wood structural members comprises a metal plate 1 having a plurality of teeth 7 extending from one face thereof, each of the teeth being constituted by a bent-out portion of the plate vacating an elongate slot 9 in the plate, and each tooth 7 having a tip portion with straight edges 15a, Fig. 3 converging to a point and side edges 23a diverging at a small angle from the tip to the plate, the shank portion of each tooth being V-shape in cross-section with a ridge 27, the ridge being disposed at an angle slightly greater than 90 degrees to plane of the associated slot 9, the tip portion having a flat surface 28 at an angle to the ridge 27, and the teeth on the plate being arranged in parallel longitudinal rows L1 to L6 and parallel transverse rows T1 to T11, the teeth in adjacent longitudinal and transverse rows facing in opposite directions. The teeth in each longitudinal row are staggered but each third tooth is in line and the array of teeth forms a repeating pattern of six teeth, e.g. those denoted by the lines L1 and L2 and T1 to T6. The spacing of the patterns transversely is greater than that between adjacent rows in each pattern to leave wider strips W1, for strengthening purposes. Lines CLT may be drawn transverse to the plate which do not intersect any of the slots 9. The shape and disposition of the teeth is such that as they are driven into the wood the angle between the plane of the slot 9 and the ridge 27 increases. In an alternative embodiment and adapted to be made from thicker sheet metal a gusset portion is formed in the base of each tooth 7.
