Abstract
1,169,385. Cooling reactors. STONE & WEBSTER ENG. CORP. 22 March, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 13500/67. Heading G6C. A pressurized water reactor is mounted within a containment vessel together with a reservoir of liquid having a specific gravity lower than water. Steam, leaking from a ruptured reactor pressure vessel, makes contact with the liquid free surface and is condensed to form water which sinks to the reservoir base. Continuous steam condensation occurs at the liquid surface and the leakage steam pressure within the containment vessel is reduced. The condensing liquid may be a water-based solution of a organic material, an emulsion or a colloidal suspension.
