Abstract

1,169,221. Grinding. TAP & DIE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE Ltd. 3 Feb., 1967 [4 Feb., 1966], No. 5080/66. Heading B3D. An apparatus for synchronizing the linear movement of a workpiece 12 or tool 18 with the rotational movement of the workpiece comprises a planar linkage having a rigid first lever 26 with movable connections 32, 33, 34 at three different points along its length, the first connection 33 being pin-and-slot and to a first screw-threaded member 24 which is non- rotatable and the axis of which lies substantially perpendicular to the first lever, the pin being both rotatable and slidable in the slot, the first screw threaded member 24 co-operating with a second screw-threaded member 20 coupled for rotation with the workpiece, the second connection 32 being to a second rigid lever 16 substantially perpendicular to the first lever and associated with a structure 13 carrying the tool or workpiece, the third connection 34 being to a stationary member 14, and the first lever and structure each having two or more spaced points to which opposite ends of the second lever are connected. The workpiece 12 is mounted in a headstock 10 slidable on the machine bed 14 so that a screw thread is formed on the workpiece by a grinding wheel 18. The rotary movement of the workpiece is transmitted by a splined connection 22 to the screw-threaded member 20 which is held against axial movement and engages the first screw-threaded member 24. The latter is held against rotation and connected by the first, pin-and-slot, connection to the first lever 26 which, at its other end, is mounted by the adjustable connection 34 to the bed 14 of the machine. The first lever 26 is connected by the second connection 32 to the second lever 16, the other end of which is connected to a member 28 on the workpiece carriage, the first lever and member 28 having a plurality of locations 30 whereby the second lever can be adjusted. In another arrangement both the first and second connections consists of pins engaging slots perpendicular to the member 20 and lever 16. A spring, weight or hydraulic or pneumatic means may be provided to take up play between the first lever 26 and member 28. In an alternative embodiment, the grinding wheel is moved axially and the workpiece held against axial movement.
