Abstract
1,169,050. Device for activating electric cells. VARTA A.G. 7 Aug., 1967 [13 Aug., 1966], No. 36206/67. Heading H1B. In a device for the activation of deferred action electric batteries the electrolyte is contained between a piston 2 which moves in a housing 1, and a further piston (3) which moves relative to, and more readily than, the first piston, and which is moved by gas pressure, generated by, e.g. a gas cartridge 8, towards piston 1 to pierce the base 5 thereof by means of a needle 4 projecting downwards from the piston 3 through the electrolyte, which is then forced into the electrode chamber 6 via inlets (7); the piston 3 having reached the base of piston 2, the latter is moved to a position in which it blocks the inlets 7, so preventing any possible return of electrolyte from the chamber 6. The piston 2 may be held in its final position by teeth in the housing 1 or by means of a lock washer which holds the needle 4 in its end position.
