Abstract
1,168,506. Valves. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 12 June, 1967 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 26976/67. Heading F2V. [Also in Division F1] A valve 22 for use with a ram 28 comprises a valve body 30 having an elongated bore 34, first and second passageways 38, 40 leading from the bore to the exterior surface of the body for communication with the ram, a piston-rod 46 slidably disposed in the bore and having its forward end 48 exposed to pressure applied through the first passageway 38 from the ram and its rearward end 50 extending outwardly of the valve body to atmospheric pressure, metering means 52 movable by the piston-rod to control the flow through the second passageway 40 and outlet means 44 in the valve body in communication with the second passageway. During discharge of fluid through the passageway 40 from the ram cylinder, a passageway 54 in the metering means or land 52 throttles flow towards the outlet 44, the throttling effect being increased by movement to the right of the land when the load on the ram and hence the pressure acting through passageway 38 and ports 58 on the end 48 of the piston-rod increases. This movement is resisted by a spring 90 and is normally limited by a stop 92 to a position in which complete closure of the outlet is prevented. The passageway 40 creates a pressure differential during the supply of fluid to the ram so that a sealing piston 86 is displaced to the left to compress the spring 90 and ensure that the piston-rod and metering land are held in the extreme left position. A selector valve (not shown) connects the outlet 44 to a return conduit or to a pump communicating with a sump which is also connected through a vent pipe with the upper end of the ram cylinder. The valve 22 may operate an indicator or safety or weighing apparatus and be used in a fork-lift truck.
