Novel dinitrobenzenes of the general Formula I wherein A represents a straight or branched chain alkylene group containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms which may be substituted by a hydroxyl group, each of the symbols R represents a methyl, ethyl, propyl or isopropyl group or NRR together represents a pyrrolidino, piperidino, methyl-piperidino, hexamethylene-imino or morpholino group, and X represents a halogen atom, an alkoxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or an aralkoxy, aryloxy, alkylmercapto (1 or 2 carbon atoms), arylmercapto or nitro group or a group of the formula wherein A and R have the above meanings and acid addition salts thereof, are prepared by ( 1 ) reacting a compound of the Formula III with a compound of the Formula II or of the Formula IV (2) reacting a compound of the Formula II or IV with an amino-alcohol NH 2 -A-OH, converting the compound of the formula respectively into a reactive ester thereof and treating the ester with (3) reacting a compound of the formula with an amino-alcohol of the formula and (4) nitrating a compound of the formula Pharmaceutical compositions contain compounds of Formula I above and a suitable diluent and are useful in the treatment of diseases caused by viruses and for combatting intestinal parasites.
