Abstract

1,168,220. #-Butyrolactone. KYOWA CHEMICALS K.K. 11 April, 1968 [11 April, 1967], No. 17677/68. Heading C2C. γ-Butyrolactone is prepared from maleic or succinic anhydride or an ester of maleic, succinic or fumaric acid, preferably a diester of a C 1-6 alcohol, by hydrogenation in the vapour phase in the presence of copper-zinc catalyst. The ratio of Cu to Zn may be 1 : 99 to 95 : 5 or preferably 80 : 20 to 95 : 5 and the catalyst may contain a promoter, other than chromium, a carrier or a filler. The reaction may be performed at 150-350‹ 0. and at atmospheric pressure or slightly elevated pressure in the presence of H 2 gas or H 2 gas diluted with an inert gas. The reactant may be mixed with an organic solvent, e.g. γ-butyrolactone prior to the hydrogenation.
