Abstract

1,167,747. Recovering polymeric hydroxyl compounds. ASHLAND OIL & REFINING CO. 15 Nov., 1966 [16 Nov., 1965], No. 51190/66. Headings C3P and C3U. Polymeric hydroxyl compounds, e.g. PVA or polysaccharides other than dextrans, are recovered from their aqueous solutions by (a) adding to the solution a base so as to impart an alkaline pH thereto, (b) adding to the solution before, during or after pH adjustment a soluble salt of a Group IIA or transition metal of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleef and (c) recovering the precipitate of polymeric hydroxyl compounds thus formed, the base added at step (a) not having an ability to complex with the added metal cation. Suitable cations are Fe<SP>+++</SP>, Cu<SP>++</SP>, Zn++, Ni<SP>++</SP> and Ca<SP>++</SP>. From 1-30% by wt. of cation may be used, based on the polymer, whose solution may be of 0À01-50% concentration. The added base may be organic or inorganic; NaOH is preferred. A specified polysaccharide is made by the fermentation of sorghum flour and NaH 2 PO 3 , using Xanthomonas Campestris.
