Abstract

1275618 Modified clays INTERNATIONAL MINERALS & CHEMICAL CORP 25 Aug 1969 [4 Sept 1968 (4)] 42329/69 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and E1] The yield of a bentonitic or sub-bentonitic clay is increased by admixing with said clay at least one water-soluble graft polymer of acrylic acid on a substrate of polyhydroxy polymeric compound or a water-soluble salt of such a graft polymer, provided a substrate other than methyl cellulose is used when said clay is a bentonitic clay. 0À1 to 20 pounds of graft polymer may be used per ton of clay and it may be used together with an alkali metal compound, e.g. sodium carbonate or soda ash when a sub-bentonitic clay is treated. In the examples, bentonite clay slurry is treated with a solution of a graft polymer in which the substrate is selected from carboxymethyl cellulose, heteropolysaccharides, causticized lignite, sucrose, starch and polyvinyl alcohol and a sub-bentonitic clay suspension is treated with soda ash and then with a sodium salt of a graft polymer of acrylic acid on methyl cellulose. Foundry sand compositions and well drilling fluids containing clay and a graft polymer are also described (see Divisions C3 and E1).
