Abstract

1,167,549. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. RADYNE Ltd. 8 March, 1968 [9 Dec., 1966 (2)], Nos. 55322/66 and 55323/66. Heading B5K. Thermoplastic materials 13, 14 are seamwelded by passing them between adjacent parts of a vibrating tool 15 and a rotating anvil 10, at least one of the parts being formed with depressions so arranged that the resulting weld is in the form of an interrupted line or a line made up of portions having transverse components of direction with respect to the principal direction of the welding line. Preferably, the depressions are formed in the edge of the anvil 10. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the tool 15 is situated above a slotted work-table 12 and is of the piezoelectric, magnetostrictive or electromagnetic type. The anvil 10, which also feeds the materials 13, 14, has depressions to form a cross-stitch pattern weld. In modifications, the edge of the anvil resembles a blunt-toothed gear, Fig. 2 (not shown), the welding portion forms a zig-zag pattern around the anvil periphery, Fig. 4 (not shown), or the welding portions on the anvil periphery are diamond-shaped, Fig. 3 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the vibrating tool comprises a disc 20 arranged obliquely to the welding table 12 and having a conical welding edge 21.
