Abstract

1,166,839. Sintered cemented carbides. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec.18, 1967 [Dec.21, 1966], No.57233/66. Heading C7D. A composite sintered cemented carbide tool tip material is made from at least two different grades of powder mixtures each consisting of one or more refractory metal carbides such as WC, TiC, TaC, NbC, and one of the binders Fe, Co or Ni, one of the mixtures (A) being compacted and partially sintered and then crushed to form granules which are then mixed with the other powder mixture (B) to form a composite mixture which is compacted and sintered to form a composite material consisting of a sintered matrix of the powder mixture (B) containing dispersed sintered granules of the mixture (A) previously partially sintered, in the size range 50-250 microns. Examples are given of the preparation of the following composites made from two different grades of mixtures, one of which is a mixture of W% of an 80/20 of WC and TiC with X% Co, and the other is a mixture of Y% WC and Z% Co, where W, X, Y and Z are respectively 5-50%, 3-10%, 5-50% and 3-50% by total weight of the final sintered composite. The composite can be used for machining steel or cast iron workpieces at a surface speed of 600 ft. /minute at a feedrate 0À020 inches/revolution of the workpiece. The metal carbides have a grain size of 1-5 microns and the method can be such as to produce granules of a cast iron cutting grade in a matrix of a steel cutting grade or vice versa. Alternatively two steel cutting grades may be used together or two cast iron cutting grades may be combined to form a matrix of coarse grained cemented carbide with a dispersion of a fine grained cemented carbide.
