Abstract

1,166,528. Electrically conductive laminates. LANGLEY LONDON Ltd. 24 July, 1968 [24 July, 1967; 12 July, 1968], Nos. 33960/67 and 33494/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions H1 and H5] A heating element or resistor 1 comprises an etched resistance metal foil pattern 2 sandwiched between silicone resin - impregnated layers 3 of mica, built-up mica or mica paper, the pattern providing terminals 4 and an extended electrically conducting path 5 between them, the assembled element 1 being cured under heat and pressure to bond it into a homogeneous sheet. The foil 2 may be etched on a mount comprising a film of a partially-cured silicone resin, which is resistant to the etching acid, the mount being incorporated in the homogeneous sheet. Alternatively the mount may be an acidresistant polyethylene film which is stripped from the foil pattern before the bonding of the assembled element 1 into the homogeneous sheet. The bonding is carried out in two stages; the final cure may be carried out in situ in the electrically heated appliance, e.g. kettle, cooker, toaster, space heater, water heater or iron. The foil 2 may be a nickel chromium alloy, nickel iron, chromium iron or copper nickel alloy. The foil thickness is 0.0005-0.002 inch.
