Abstract
1,166,269. Demagnetizing. HOESCH A. G. 28 Dec., 1966 [28 Dec., 1965], No.58000/66. Heading H1P. A method of demagnetizing ferromagnetic material subject to a magnetic interference field, comprises the steps of generating an alternating demagnetizing magnetic field having one halfcycle of each cycle thereof less in amplitude than the other half-cycle, positioning the ferromagnetic material so that the alternating demagnetizing magnetic field is superimposed on the interference field in the material, the half-cycles of reduced amplitude of the demagnetizing field being arranged to have the same polarity as the interference field, and gradually reducing the amplitude of the demagnetizing field in the material to a value substantially smaller than the interference field. In an embodiment three superimposed coils 27<SP>1</SP>, 27<SP>11</SP> and 27<SP>111</SP> are used. In other embodiments a single coil may be used Fig. 2, (not shown) or an arrangement of a series connected rectifier and rheostat with a resistance or rectifier in parallel therewith, the arrangement being connected in series with the coil or coils Figs. 5 and 6, (not shown). The material may be moved away from the windings or the current through the windings may be gradually reduced.
