Abstract

1,166,197. Standby supply systems. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. 14 Aug., 1967 [3 Sept., 1966], No. 37265/67. Addition to 1,166,196. Heading H2H. In a system as disclosed in the parent Specification for producing alternating current of substantially constant frequency from a variable speed source wherein a synchronous machine 10 driven from the source 13 feeds a load bus-bar 16 through an uncontrolled rectifier 14 and a controlled bridge inverter 15, with a synchronous condenser 17 normally supplying reactive current, a means is provided for controlling the firing of the inverter elements responsive to the commutation voltage and a reference signal so that the firing instants occur when the commutation voltage is below the reference value. The reference voltage preferably has a sawtooth shape but it may be sinusoidal, and the firing angle should lie within the range 90- 180 degrees of each supply wave. After temporary short-circuit conditions across the busbars, the ignition voltage is made ineffective for a predetermined time. Such short-circuit currents, as measured by a unit 83, may also be fed through a threshold device 84 to a comparator 85 causing weakening of the machine 10 excitation. The excitation is normally controlled by comparison of a signal Xa representative of a frequency or other parameter with a corresponding reference Xr. The inverter may include rectifier elements of the thermionic valve or semi-conductor type, which may be series or parallel connected. The power for the ignition circuit may be derived from a pair of parallel connected rectifiers (77), (78), Fig. 3 (not shown), one fed from the bus-bar 16 and the other from a current transformer in series with condenser 17. The ignition voltage may be derived across the controlled rectifier elements through a Zener diode to ensure constancy. A number of alternative arrangements are described in the Specification including one to start in sequence a plurality of synchronous condensers from the bus-bar 16 through a common choke (116), see Fig. 8, not shown.
